This is more of an electric guitar term, but it applies equally well to acoustic instruments.

A "dot neck" is a neck whose fingerboard is decorated with a simple pattern of dots marking the significant frets (e.g. 3,5,7,9,12,15,17.)

The term "dot neck" is used by collectors to distinguish the instrument from the other inlay pattern, usually rectangular blocks, that may characterize a different production series of a similar model.
