Taku Sakashta's
Unicorn & Mustang Mandolin

We can always count on our friend, Taku Sakashta, to bring a fresh approach and a sense of humor when he undertakes a new instrument design. A couple of months ago, Taku told me he was going to try his hand at making a mandolin or two after concentrating on arch top jazz guitars for the last few years. Last Friday (June 25, 1999) he and his wife, Kazzy, dropped in at a gathering of old music pals in my back yard to show off the results of his efforts.

They brought along two instruments - one, a replica of the traditional Gibson F-5, and the other, an original Taku adaptation. I really don't know where to begin to describe this instrument, so I'll just let the photos do the talking*:
